Guild Wars Reforged Announces Afterlife, the First New DLC for the Original Guild Wars in Nearly 20 Years

ArenaNet has officially revealed Guild Wars: Afterlife, a paid DLC expansion for Guild Wars Reforged that will launch on January 13, 2027. According to the studio, it is the first new DLC created for the original Guild Wars in nearly 20 years, following the release of Eye of the North in 2007. A New Journey Into Xotecha

Afterlife takes players to Xotecha, a forgotten land hidden deep within the Mists. The new storyline follows the Order of Moonless Night as they investigate the growing influence of Nightmares and the mysterious Cult of Odran.

Unlike previous Guild Wars expansions, the new content centers on the Unformed, a dynamic dungeon designed to change with every run. ArenaNet says no two expeditions will be identical, with layouts, enemies, encounters, and bosses varying between playthroughs.

A Roguelike Dungeon Built Around Skill Drafting

The centerpiece of Afterlife is its roguelike progression system.

When entering the Unformed, players leave behind their normal character progression and inventory. Instead, each run begins with a fresh starting loadout. As players clear encounters, they draft new skills to expand their build, including abilities drawn from professions outside their character's usual specialization.

ArenaNet says this system is intended to encourage experimentation while making each dungeon run feel distinct. Permanent rewards earned inside the Unformed can also be carried back to the main game.

New Rewards and Returning Characters

Players will adventure through the DLC using their existing Guild Wars characters, but progression inside the Unformed is separate from the game's traditional equipment and leveling systems.

Completing runs unlocks rewards that improve future expeditions while also granting permanent items usable outside the dungeon, creating progression across multiple play sessions.

Guild Wars: Afterlife launches on January 13, 2027 for Guild Wars Reforged. Players who pre-purchase the DLC receive the exclusive Vestments of the Order cosmetic costume in addition to the discounted price before launch.
